Uses the story of the emergence, development, and transformation of professions and disciplines

in the late 19th and 20th centuries to study knowledge/power relations in the modern Western society.

Review alternate theoretical approaches and considers different mechanisms for the delineation of professional/

disciplinary boundaries, the consolidation of the new forms of knowledge and exertise and the establishment of

intellectual and professional authority.

An examination of how gender is related to people's experience at work, with a focus on the U.S.

Will address how conceptions of work, skill, and the logic of pay systems are gendered and how

these and dther factors affect the types of job, compensation, and career advancement opportunities

of sexes.
 

Althauser(Indiana Uni.)'s [The Economy, Organization and Work]

This focuses on organizations, the workplace and economic life as understood by sociologists.

the changing nature of the jobs we do and the organizations we work in, and the increasingly global

charater of our economy are topics addressed by this course.
